Thought I'd just carry on with this one

Started June 12 so this is Day 19

Ph 7.8
Ammonia 1.0 (topped up to 4)
Nitrite 2.0
Nitrate 10

The ammonia has started to go down every day now, and this is the highest that the Nitrite has been. When will I see the spike and how high will it go to?

Looking good motsy, dont worry too much yet about the nitrAte reading. It will be up & down with the cycle & add to the confusion. With the nitrIte at 2.0 now, it looks like you're getting to the spike Smile

Motsy if I were you id just dose Ammonia to 2ppm

it shows that your bacteria is starting to work now as the Ammonia is being converted as a super quick rate!

Dose up to 4ppm just for a day or two & see if the nitrIte goes up anymore.

After 2 days, just get the ammonia up to 2ppm & wait for the nitrIte to drop all the way back to 0. Mine only ever peaked at 2 ish Very Happy

I didnt get much in the way of a nitrite spike either. Go with munchys plan motsy, give it a couple more days at east and then reduce if there is no change in the readings. From what I remember, the spike comes when the ammonia starts to go down to 0 and you are not there yet are you?

You will get a small nitrite spike then a pause then the proper nitrite spike, you will know it when you get it Wink

You will find that ammonia stays low or even zero whilst you get nitrite at high levels, the spike your looking for is basically off the scale on your test kit, levels of 1pp are not a spike... 3 or more and staying there is (2 or 3 days of constant high in my experience) this is when you reduce the ammonia going in and from then on, you keeping doing the same until one day ammonia and nitrite are zero, nitrate will be high (its the end product and isnt actually worth measuring tbh) and is what the water changes deal with.

DO NOT FALL FOR THE TRAP

Dont buy fish in the day of zero readings, make sure they stay zero for three or more days and therefore add the ammonia as usual to be sure the bugs are upto speed Wink

Ammonia eaters grow much faster than the nitrite ones, so be patient it is pointless to rush things when running the cycle

woo hooooo Very Happy

Keep dosing up to 4ppm, the pH is fine. It will fluctuate with the levels of ammonia & nitrItes
