PostSubject: Re: Which ones.??   Mon Oct 06, 2008 1:32 am

Hi me again. ;o(
I think i have made a real big booby Sad
went to our local f/s today with hubby,
and asked the f.s.owner what i could have with the 2 i already have.
took a pic of them.
he said the big bully is a port hole c. ?
and said i could have fire mouth c. as they tend to stick up for themselfs and wont take no nonsense... . No
now he/she ?? has 3 to bully. he/she doesant actully harm them but
gives them a poke and threatens them till they move out of the way.
now 1 did stand up to him/her. but it was head on then.
and the fire mouth backed away.;o(
its awfull seeing the others scarper when he/she comes near them.
the trouble is, if i had to get rid of any it would be the 3 others.
as the bully one has such a funny character and pretty friendly when i go near the tank. he/she loves it in the air stream. and hovers in the corner
for ages as he/she knows the food comes in there.
i also have 2 ornaments with big holes in, and he goes down them for ages
before coming back up.i put a plastic plant in yesturday,he/she watched me do it.and when i had done went and pulled it right out of the gravel..lol
thats what he/she thought of that..lol
so i really dont want to part with him/her.
if anything i would just have the bully in the tank on its own..
if only for the things it does..lol
all this and all i wanted was a peacefull tank. Sad
so now i have 3 unhappy fish instead of the one..
now i don't know what to do.?
just gone from bad to worse.

sorry, i have been away for the weekend. i will try & post some info up when i have eaten me dinner Smile
As for putting a fish in a tank because it can 'stick up for itself' is a bad idea, as you can see. Some fish will fight to the death for dominance...

I will be back soon

Here and here are some articles with some more info

I would remove them all or you will end up with a tank with just one well fed fish in, maybe do some research into what fish you want & we can advise you how to go about it.

Thanks MC, and it's good advice you give. Dont you just love the way the Convicts are described as 'feisty'!!

Chez, if you want to keep cichlids, then it is best to learn a bit about them first, as they can be 'feisty' so cant just be thrown together in a tank. Taking them back to the lfs is not a bad idea

PostSubject: Re: Which ones.??   Mon Oct 06, 2008 6:22 pm

Morning All. update,......
well i am pleased to announce all 4 fish have made it through the night.
with no chunks / fins missing from anyone.
i think they must have had a chat during the night
as i have just fed them and all feeding.the 2 new ones(firemouth)
are swimming freely and swim passed my bully ok with caution but he just stops and they swim passed and he lets them but gives them the evil eye.
a bit like in a school yard where kids egnor each other.
one of the firemouths is braver than the other and stands his ground.
and the bully just looks and swims passed.
the other one swims away in the oppersite direction.
i think its a case of you stay out of my way and i'll stay out of yours.
the small one convict. thinks its great as hes not getting chased as much
i think he is only very young, you see i read somewhere to only get one of them as they breed all the time, and can be nasty protecting there eggs.
hes the most timid/scared one.
so he might have to go to my friend/neighbour. if things don't get better for him.
shame really hes such a lovely little fish.
don't worry i'm keeping watch over them all the time.
i really think the bully one is a porthole.?
i have read alot about temprements of them
conditions,needs,mating.
but i suppose its like us,you can get nice easy going people and then feisty
people.lol
anyway for now the tank seems calm.
my neighbour is on standby with his t.tank should all hell break loose.;o(
but keeping my fingers crossed, all's ok. as now i have the amount of fish i want.
was going to get a catfish next week. but i don't think i will now
in case they gang up on that.
think i might sell up and go for a budgie.lol
thanks for your replys.

Really glad thing seems to be settling chez, and it's good that you have your neighbors tank for an emergency standby too - it's a bit of reassurance for you.

Budgies are great little things, but I have found they dont swim very well, and their feathers get all tatty once you put them in your tank! dunno Very Happy

diver Smile
thank you Diane for that..lol

But in all honesty i think the bully is just letting them know
its his tank.and moves them on ...
but he doesan't chase them like he did yesturday i thought i was going to have a all out war as they was confronting each other.
will see what today brings.
my friend has a big corner tank and just has a 1 plec 1 guirami 1 guppy
so i think the small convict will be fine in there should need be.
catching it would be another problem.lol

I think the thing with some fish is that there is the potential for bullying, andcichlids are known to have the potential to be narky - some more so than others.

I know Munchy has LOADS of cichlids, but has tanks that are deliberately kept overstocked in order to keep bullying down to a minimum - this is the recommended way for the fish she keeps. In order to do that safely though she needs to have tanks that are set up to cope with that - extra filtration and so on.

I think Firemouths are generally thought to be fairly peaceful, so it might alll settle down once the hierachy has been established but Munchy can confirm that hopefully.

I would let them see if they can settle the dominance battle between them. The balance will be upset by removing/adding any fish whatsoever. As Diana said...things could possibly settle when they decide who is boss & everyone else understands.
Sometimes it can go the other way where Mr Big Fishy says "right i'm the boss" everyone agrees then Mr Medium Fishy sits in his pot & thinks "Wait a minute - i want to be boss" so out he comes & starts WW3!!!
Removing the dominant fish means that someone else has to step up to the role of tank boss so you could be at it forever. If you get more problems with the 'new' boss, maybe try a tank divider & let him be on his own while the others suss their pecking order, then let him join them.
It can work.....sometimes. Good luck & keep us posted Smile

PostSubject: Re: Which ones.??   Sat Oct 11, 2008 12:53 am

both the firemouths went back to the LFS today.
the bulling never stopped, one of the firemouths and the convict
never had any food since sun.everytime they came out
the other bullied them both back in the corner.
it was awfull to see and so sad.
so now i have a small convict in a 3ftx20x12 tank
i bet it thinks its in the sea..lol
peace and quite at last.
think i might leave it like this awhile
till i know what is safe to put in with the convict
but its nice to see him swimming round the and no one bothering him
thanks all for your advice

Sorry youve had all this trouble chez, but at least you have one happy fish now.

Just a word of caution, when you do decide on what other fish to get, and Munchycarrot will be able to trecommend and advise you on that, think about your filter!

Your filter will have enough bacteria to cope with the waste produced by your single fish. When you add extra fish into the tank, there will be more ammonia produced, and the bacteria will struggle to cope with that until there is enough of them to convert it to nitrite.

You may well get an increase in your ammonia and nitrite levels which could affect your fish so you will have to do daily water tests and water changes as necessary.

Not trying to put the finger of doom on you, but just something to bear in mind Very Happy
