PostSubject: Re: Which ones.??   Wed Oct 15, 2008 4:04 am

Thanks Diane.
i would think if i get my gravel cleaner
and make sure i do my water changes regular
it might not be as much trouble as a small tank.
i will only have a piece of bogwood in as i think O will need as much swimming space as possible
i will have a drip tray, but no lid
when i had tropicals before o/h built a unit but put the light on the back wall over the tank.
it looked great all fitted in.it was on bricks so weight was no problem.(that was back in the 80's of course, lol
i think he's doing the same but covering the bricks with
wooden flooring to match the skirting.
so no christmas break for O/H. lol bless..

here is the alchove he will be doing the tank on

found a old pic of the unit.with gold fish tank in.
tropical one was at the side where hifi is.
the alchove is longer than it looks in the pic.
i think its about 7ft.

I see your OH has got a job on lol. I think one of the probs with a big tank is the filter. You might need one at each end to ensure adequate water flow/oxygenation etc, as well as a heater at both ends too (this is if you have a 6ft long one.

The other thing to think of is that you will need good access from above to give the gravel a good clean, so I guess the cupboards at the top of your photo might need to be left out! Very Happy

Funny how we look at the various alcoves and spaces around the home and think "hmmm, I wonder what size tank I can fit in there?" Smile

lol. i have done very well
its been over a year since my goldfish died and went to that big fish tank in the sky.
i swore i would never have another f.tank.
then i sat looking at the alchove and said to o/h i think thats screaming out for a fish tank.
so started off with a small 48lt on a stand.as i thought i would only have the room at the side wall of the chimmney breast.
it looked lovely running its fishless cycle with the ornaments in.this tank was just for 1 S/fighter
this lasted about 3 days.when i decided if i'm going to sit and look at a empty tank it might as well be a big one.as i know i would want more than one fish..mmm.lol
trouble is my 3 seater settee is 7 ft long.
and i can only have it where it is now.
so the space i have between the arm and back wall is only 15inches wide. depending how big O grows to turn round in the tank.
if all fails me thinks a new smaller suite is in order next year.lol

I found this online chez that might be useful to you. Gives you info on Oscar care, feeding etc as well as the minimum size tank for a single Oscar, and how much that weighs when full of water!!! affraid

Your OH might need to know that when he's building a space for it pale

These sound like interesting fish to keep but a bit out of my league at the moment (just at the end of the fishless cycle!!).

Have you kept them before?

never evie
i have just had the usual community tank with guppys/danios/neons/and bronze catfish. all the guppys breed affraid
and had that many,
so starting again i decided not to go down that road again too stressfull catching babies before they was eaten.and i got fed up of counting fish making sure all was there.
so this time i decided on just a species tank.
it didn't work out with the chiclids, so now i have just
the 1 fish,Oscar. now named Elvis.....
he shys away when i go near the tank still. but getting braver
like today i laid down on the sofa with my face near the tank
and he came over and stares at you.lol
i think he's weighing me up. i wiggle my finger at him and he looks shocked.but watches it.and then gets bored and swims away.maybe because they was no food in it lol.
i know it will take time but i think he will get tame and trust me.
i moved a orniment yesturday and when i walked away he went straight to it to investigate what i had been up to.lol
he's picky at the moment about what he eats.
he wont eat flakes.so i had to net them back out.
prawn again today.
i have put some pellets in that sink but he never bothered with them either.so he's being picky just now.
i will put a pic on when i can manage a good one,up to now i have taken about 100 pic's and all was rubbish.

the good thing about oscars is that although they grow big they dont mind being on their own so he will enjoy having the place to himself Very Happy

thanks driver.
he keeps trying to up root one of the plants.so not keen on that.lol
i starved him for 2 day as he was only eating prawns
plus we was away for the weekend so i couldn't feed him
anyway he did have the flakes i gave him.mmmm lol think he's trying it on.
although he is cute he's not getting away with everything.
i had to do a water change as one of the stats wasan't right. i think it was the amonia. so did 2 ... 20% (they do big poo's don't they)
will check it today. i also bought a gravel vac yesturday from argos
don't think he will be too pleased when that goes in his house.

what test kit are you using chez? The API Masterkit is generally thought to be the most accurate and will help you keep your water stats on track.

If you have ammonia or nitrite, do a 50% water change and check stats again. Keep doing that until you have both of these levels back to 0 and the nitrate below 40. Then do weekly water changes and gravel vacs - I change about 30% water and 50% gravel vac every week and that keeps things ticking over ok.

Hope you get it sorted and your little fishy is ok fish Very Happy

That sounds a bit better chez. Is the < 0-3 the lowest reading you can get on that kit?

Its strange that your thermometer is stuck at 81 isnt it - they are usually quite accurate I think. Are you sure young Elvis isnt languishing in a sauna? lol Very Happy
