PostSubject: another fish what to do??? please   Sat Nov 01, 2008 12:46 am

Hi All
as you know i have Elvis the O
In his batchelor pad
now i have a small 13inchx12x12 tank i think it is
with small filter and heater and hood but no light in hood
doing nothing in my shed.
i was going to have a Beta before and ended up with Elvis.
do you think i should set this small tank up in my kitchen
yet again another batchelor pad
for 1 Betta. or a single fish?
if so do i need to do the fishless cycle?
or can i use squeezings from my mates very well cycled tank (14yrs)
i did this with my 3ft tank. tested water and everyhing was fine.
thanks

That gives you about 28litres, which would be big enough for a single male betta splendens I think.

You can use the squeezings from either your friends or your established tank but you may still have to go through the fishless cycle to fully get the filter primed.

The other thing you could do is put the filter from the small tank in your established tank and have it running for a while for a while and prime it that way. If you do that for about 3 weeks it should be well loaded with bacteria, and then you can go and get your betta.

I see you have now succumbed to MTS )multiple tank syndrome - it affects us all after a while! Crying or Very sad Very Happy

Thanks Diane
the thing is the filter for this small tank
has a small black bag in and feels like gravel or some kind of stones in it.
there's no sponge.?
but there's no room in the filter for sponge really.
not sure about this.
maybe someone has one of these to advise me
its a very tiny filter but works fine.

Can you give us a bit more info chez?

Do you know the make of filter, is it an internal or in lid?

That small black bag of gravel sounds like a bag of carbon chips which isn't needed. If the filter is very small, you can always just remove enough filter media from your main tank that will fit it and et voila, instantly cycled tank! Wink

Looks like it might be an old Fluval.

You could do as Mary says - cut a chunk of filter sponge out of your current filter (replace with a chunk of new) and put in this one. Youve then got a fully cycled filter all ready to use.

You could also take a bit of the gravel from the O's tank too, as that is loaded with bacteria too.

You will need to keep a check on your O's tank then, as you are removing a load of bacteriia from the Oscar tank so will have to do water checks a bit more frequently on that for a week or two.

That should be fine. That looks about the same size filter that I have in my 28L tank and that's what I did. Smile

lol
decided not to go with the smaller tank.
even though its very small it would take too much room up in my kitchen
so used my loaf for a change,
now i have my coffee making machine there.
mmmm for now...lol

I think that only happens if they are sliced Diana but if you get one of those round crusty ones you should be ok.

Well, you could keep a small fish in a coffee machine I suppose - looking at the posts about unusual aquariums gives you loads of ideas doesnt it? laughing
