PostSubject: somethings appered   Mon Jan 12, 2009 2:32 am

hi
i wasan't sure where to put this as its not a emergency
and hopefully not a problem.
i have noticed Elvis the Oscar has a white thin mark on the side of his face
its like white thin cotton, or a scratch.is best to explain it.
i don't know if you can see on the pic.
hope this is nothing to worry about. Sad
all stats are fine,i change 2 buckerts of water every wednesday without fail.
now i will do a 2 bucket water change tomorrow, and again wednesday.
see if this helps.i dont fancy adding anything to his water when i dont know
what this is..
he does have a cave in the tank. and a big plastic moss ball, so wondering if he has scratched
it on one of them...

It's hard to tell from the photo, chez but it does look like some kind of scratch and possible subsequent fungal infection. I suggest you keep your eye on it and, if it looks be getting any worse, then maybe adding Melafix and Pimafix will be a good starting point. Smile

its still the same no worse Smile
i did a 2 bucket water change yesturday
and i will do another saturday.
i have took out the cave but left the moss ball for decor really
i might buy a piece of bogwood and take the ball out.
i'm wondering if he has scratched it on the drip tray though?......
i had to cut a small corner off it to get the food in
and he jumps up when im feeding him to catch the food.
will keep my eye on it, but up to now its the same
see if the water changes might keep it ok.?
he's getting very big now length/width/tall
i keep looking for a bigger tank but all down south up to now.
about right..lol
i like the big Rena ones but there very expensive Shocked
i think at the rate he is growing i will need the big tank by june.!!!
he's about 5 inch now and about nearly 3 inch tall..
best about him now you can see all his features shapes: fat lips
he looks a grumpy bugger...... lol

He certainly is growing chez - have to start filling your piggy bank ready for a new home for him I think Smile

Hope the scratcvh or whatever settles down soon. I second what Mary says about trying Melafix, and keeping an eye on your water, making sure that Ammonia and Nitrite stays 0 and Nitrate stays below 40.

good news the scratch seems to have gone today Very Happy
i bet that is what it was when he jumps up for the food
i will still do the water change again just to be sure.

i went to feed him some bloodworms today which i put in a plastic strainer, i wasan't going to give him all of them,
as it was about half a cube................
he had better ideas, as i put the strainer in the water to let a few out
he headbutted the strainer knocking all in the tank. Shocked and wetting me through
he made me jump..lol
so thats him done today no more food
he is growing very fast Diane. im shocked myself
i have my eye on a tank on ebay, just what i want
but it has about 6 days to go still.
i'm getting desperate now as i want him in the bigger tank before he gets bigger, or i will be having to buy a bigger net to catch him..lol
heres a pic of him taken yesturday.

He really is a lovely looking fish chez, and by the sounds of it a real character too! Smile

Good luck with your new tank, hope you get it!

He certainly is a lovely fish, chez. I've read of Oscar keepers who put a ping pong ball in the tank for the fish to "play" with! Very Happy

That sounds like a good idea, I would love to see fish doing that. Are Oscars the most 'playful' fish? Have to say none of my more ordinary fish dont seem to do much more than swim

In general, Fishfan - it seems the larger the fish, the bigger the personality. Wink

I lost one of my Oscars last week ( Sad ) stupid - I moved them to the 6ft and within 10 min the black one was covered in fungus. Died within 24 hours. Rest of the tnak ok, other Oscar a bit fungusy but clearing up well after a week of myxazin.

Chez, I wouldn't worry about the odd scratch - mine get them fairly often usually just surface damage.

That sounds weird indi - and what a shame to lose a fish like that. Glad the other one is ok though.

Oh no, how sad... Sad

Why would the move have precipitated that though? Or was it just a coincidence? scratch

Sorry Chez gate crashed your thread a bit.

General concensus (on another forum Embarassed ) was that stress brought it on - basically he was bit of a wuss and the move from the tank in the living room to the tank in the dining room (all of about 15ft LOL) was enough to make him keel over Sad Otherwise water was about as close to identical as you can get.

I do have Ghost still (the albino/lutino one) and slightly smaller black one Shadow who i was going to rehome but can now keep.
