what you do is -

Pray to the fish goddess (Diana fighting ) and declare you unworthyness etc

or simply take out the media from the existing running filters and put it ion the new filter - it ought to go in one way or another (this is why I avoid filters that have to used their own brand media - me eheims are like this - but I can get my own stuff in without too much fiddling)

It really ought to be as simple as that

Personally - for bigger tanks - i dont hink you can beat external canister filters and these are much less faff for the fish when it comes to cleaning (the bonus being they add slightly to the total volume of the system thus even more room fore recovery should something go wrong) In your situation - id recommend as a future project getting a decebnt big external - use that for the main filtration aand turn off the internal (in built) filterr and use this only for emergency chemical filtration or simply soley (leaving on all the time) for scrubbing (mechanical filtration/polishing)

Really tho = just take out the media from the old filter and put it inthe new one - if it wont go in - what you can do (and ive done this successfully a few times) is put all the gravel and ornaments from the old tank in the new along with all the water - you may even want to put the oscar in the new tankas well at some point Very Happy - and get the media from the old filter and either leave it floating about in the new tank or put it into mesh back (or old nylon tights are just as good and cheap) and suspend the package right infront of the outflow of the new filter - the media doesnt have to be in a filter to work - as long as its 'fed' ie getting water circulation on, through or around it - it will be fine and in the grand scheme of things - E wont be a massive bioload in a big tank (on his own) so do this and let the system run for a month before adding new friends for E

You will want to (for peace of mind) want to do some water testing - possibly twice daily initially but i doubt youll have a problem - but just to keep a beady eye on things - you coulkd also help matters by doing daily water changes - not massive ones - just 20 - 40 liters - even if its just to vac out the 'lumps'

Hope this helps - if not - back to praying to the goddess diana Very Happy

respect fighting

Well, the Goddess Diana seems not to be around so I will take a chance of incurring her wrath and having to submit myself to saccrifice eyebrows , and agree with the above Smile

As for the water - cant you just make it warmer when you put it in the tank?

yup topping up with the extra water - easy way to get it to temp - well this is my recipe

I use 15 liter buckets for water changes - i put 12 liters in each (using a hand jug to get water from tap to bucket)

this time of year _ I use 4 jugs (8liters) of cold tap water and 2 jugs (4 liters) of 'hot' tap water (i judge hot to be when its luke warm from tap as it flows)

you will have to judge or use a thermometer for your own water system at home

Thanks Guys i blew my kettle up last time on off on off.lol
it was on about 40 times...
as for the tights will a stocking do????..lol

i was wondering what to put in with E... filter wise as both the tanks are fitted
already in.?
now i have a spare air pump with a airstone i run the bubble background off.
so do i just let the piece of filter media float about in the tub hes in?
criky that will freak him out...lol

tights - stockings - whatever - nylon is best tho (all the same to me when theyre on the .... anyway Very Happy)

if E is in a tub - change a quarter of the water every 12hours - keep the air going and yes - drop in some bio media - or all the media - the media must be kept wet n fed - in some ways - the filter media is more important than E - as E relies on it for his well being

To be honest - id beinclined to put E in a big plastic box (I got an 80lietr container with a lid from B&Q for 10 a while back) put E in that (filled with his tank water of course) and even if its for a few hours - put a heater and airline and existing filter media in this box (even if its in the tights - I get the cheap tesco own brand for this job - 4 pairs for 1 - I dont wear these as im too short and i doint suit wrinkled stockings :p)

Put E in the box (and put the lid on - he may well try to jump)

Put as much of the old tank water and substrate in as possible in the new tank - add the new / additional substrate 9assuming your using it - some oscar keepers dont use it) - add additional water but aallow room for the water E is in (you will be adding this to the new tank too) and obviously get the new heater and filter running - put the bagged older media in the new tank grab one not so impressed E and put him in new tank (when water is roughly the same temp - +/- 1 degree c is ok) and then put the last of the old tank water in thenew tank.

Keep lights off for a day or two - treat him like a new fish - dont feed him on the day of the trauma either

That (should) be it

Oh no - im real sorry to hear that

still - least you have a plan for moving elvis now without the rush - there is always a bright side Wink

I reckon you'll be glad of this hiccup in 5weeks time Wink

I satand by what I said about inbuilt filters tho - id prefer an external anyday - and this will make your life easier if you go down this route (and less mechanical thihngs for elvis to break in the tank too :p)

in that case chez - (as best as you can) simply put the filter media from the internal into your new external - dont worry about everything going in - the most important bits are biomedia (be it noodles/rings or foam) things like carbon and polishing (fine) pads are not really worth the trouble.
So put the jewel foam(s) where the foam would go in the new external (in a basket) somewhere nr the bottom of the filter -this will enable the bugs to grow and populate thehigher levels - any 'gap' around the edges/sides could be filled with either bits of foam or noodles etc

Any questions - dont hesitate to ask (anyone else but me )

cheers (I heard elvis sigh in relief when he heard he'd been gazzumpt Very Happy)

I use two nets for 'fishing' both different colours as well - one does the chasing (the white one) and the other (black) is the ambush net Wink

Fish do learn and they remember for at least 6months as well

I use the same two net technique - it's amazing how quick the little scamps realize just who is being targeted and invaribly, said fish hides in the plants. crazy
