PostSubject: Hanging   Thu Apr 02, 2009 1:45 am

Got up yesterday morning and my fantail goldfish was 'hanging' in the water - head up but completely vertically.

It had been a bit 'off' for a while - would go and hide under the filter but come out when food was about and then swim around normally, and had been doing that for weeks so I sort of came to think of it as her normal behaviour, but last night it was just staying on the bottom, and then this morning doing its hanging impersonation.

I put it in the q tank, and have watched it for a while, but obviously something was wrong - not able to swim, seemed to have trouble reaching the surface so I thought it might be some sort of swimbladder problem.

Anyway, upshot of it all is that I have just had to put it to sleep because it was obviously in distress Sad

It was a great little fish, but fortunately the other two seem fit and well.

My query is, do I need to treat the remaining two for anything - if it was some sort of internal bacteria that caused it - or just keep an eye on them?

By the way, all the water stats/temp etc were fine.

Ah the poor thing. My Fantail has a habit of hanging the other way, head down but then rights itself and shimmies off. If there were no obvious symptoms other than that, there's not really much you can do except hope that it was just a one-off, I guess. scratch

A couple of years dekks. It has now been buried in the fishy graveyard in the back garden with full military honours (and a little prayer said by a mourning 8yr old!).

Its burial place is markd by an old tank ornament so we can keep an eye on it lol.

The things kids have us do Smile

yeah but it makes they feel better - its all a learning process for them not only that but
it shows they care which is very rare these days.

In terms of meds - I wouldmt necessarily reach for the hardcore stuff on the off chance - you could (if it made you feel better) use a half dose of melafix/pimafix but if it wre me - id leave well enough alone and just do a water change and watch the others (closely)

The very first hint of trouble, then treat them.

If I were to have a fishy grave yards, id nead 20acres to myself by now Very Happy - imafraid its straight tot he compost bin for any of my losses Wink

Thats probably why the mouse I found in our compost bin looked so fat n healthy Very Happy

Anyway - hope the others stay ok (and you kid(s) are not too traumatised) I dont know how long fantails usually last tho - isnt 14years about right for a goldfish?

Some species can live up to 25 years, I believe. Wink
