Cheers. I noticed a crab scooting round so I have set a pint glass with a prawn in an attempt to catch and sump it.

I have had odd reading from my cycle..the ammonia is 0 and the nitrites were 0 and the nitrates were between 25 - 50

people are telling me my cycle is over...its only been set up just over 13ish days!!

cycle happens very fast in marine

just dont put too many fish in at once
same as tropical.

just done a water check and its showing ammonia - 0.25, nitrite - 0.1, phosphates - 0.1 - 0.25 Im gonna add some rowaphos to drop the phosphates down.

gonna also look into a phosphate reactor.

Oh thats a shame GD - do you think the ammonia spike is due to the power cut?

Erm not too sure, However I have been setting a crab trap using uncooked prawn, muscle etc as this teddybear crab needs to come out as they are opertunist crabs and fish which like to hide in the rocks are perfect crab food for it

I know you are going to put the crab in the sump GD, but what purpose does the sump serve? Is it like an extra filter somehow - this is where I got lost with marine stuff, but I am easily confused Smile

yep your right diane
you can put small bits of live rock in there
its like another filter.
you can put all the crawlies/bristleworms ect.
you dont like in there.
plus they will eat any bits of food in there too.
I Havant got one mines only a small tank though

How do they work then chez - do you have to have another pump to push the main tank water through it or what? Does the sump have to have a filter?

Come on - share the gen!! Smile

I class the rear of my Orca 550 a sump as I have now got some cheato growing in the back with some submersible lights and its growing well.

I have also modded the rear chambers and added a second return pump so i now have 2*1200 Maxi jet pumps and the flow around the tank is RIDICULOUS lol but it keeps water spot on and no dead spots in the tank now Very Happy.

I have added Rowaphos to the rear to drop the phosphate readings and I have ordered a fluidiser which will sit in the rear also.

I have around 0.5 - 1k of rubble in one rear chamber by the intake and a skimmer which im looking to replace asap. With having 2 maxijets in the rear the water level has dropped making it easier to add things in the back.

also added some carbon and purigen. Along with a clump of wool and my rear chamber is fit for bursting.

In the cheato chamber I have also added a starfish which I seen in my rocks and I have dropped a mithrix crab which will eat and food which escapes into the rear
