PostSubject: Planning my fishies : prawn/shrimp question   Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:04 am

Hi Folks,

Still fishless-cycling it at the moment so I'm filling my time with;

1. Trying to colour-match a test-tube of ammonia etc with coloured bits of paper (API tests).

2. Choosing what fish to inhabit my tank.

Amongst 'normal' fish, I'd like to add small-ish shrimps or prawns.

I'm sure there are some (all???) fish that would see them as a nice snack, so can you advise on which fish to keep clear of? I'm looking to limit my fish species to less than 50mm (adult).

Is there a prefered shimp/prawn I should consider?

Many thanks,
J

You can buy a butchers glove (made of chainmail) for about 10 mate. That should do the trick! shark

Shrimps are superb creatures. None of my fish (goldfish, rainbow shark, iridescent sharks) ever dared lay a fin Razz on my shrimp (R.I.P.).

I wouldn't be too sure with bigger fish, though

And if you do put a shrimp make sure he eats well- preferably sinking pellets (small ones)

They moult (shed their exoskeleton) once in 20 days or so. Make sure you remove those from the tank, or they'll rot

But they don't have a long lifespan, generally die in 1-1.5 years or so Sad

Oh and one more thing. Don't put tiny tiny fish like guppies with a shrimp. Those claws might just slice through them

You can get some lovely shrimp, but you are right, they will get eaten depending on what fish you have, their size, the size of the shrimp etc.

Generally speaking, fish will try and eat anything that will fit into their mouths.

I bought 12 lovely (baby) Cherry Shrimp, and not one of them survived long enough to grow into adulthood!

There are ways to have fish and shrimp. Have lots of hiding areas - plants, caves, bogwood etc so that the shrimp can get away from the fish if they need to.

Buy some of the bigger shrimp species - Amano for example, but there are others. You might find this link gives you some useful info -
