It's been a week now and i've not had to top up my ammonia and the NitrIte level has been 0.25ppm for 5 days. I'm getting bored now lol!!

Just to make sure i'm reading this right, the color of the nitrIte JUST ABOUT matches 4ppm, right?

Dont get disheartened by the nitrite phishy. What is your ammonia reading, and how often do you need to top it up?

You said
.i cant get fish until 2 weeks time, if the tank is ready before this am i best leaving the water in there and doing nothing, then do the water change on the morning i get the fish?

When the cycle is done, if there is a delay between that and getting the fish, just keep topping the ammonia up to 2-3ppm until thew day comes you go and get your fish. On that day, do your 80% water change, fill with lovely clean water, go and do your shopping, add fish, sit back and enjoy Smile

That may be a bit dark for 4 but it's hard to tell really

It certainly looks a bit dark to me, have a look at the charts here and see if it gives you a better idea

woop woop! Nitrite is now dark purple. Looks to me like its nearly the darkest one. Nitrate is now between 10 to 20ppm so very nearly there. How many days do we think? A couple? Just need to keep ammonia at 2ppm now?

Thats great phisjy. I would give it another day and see if the nitrite is still going up - it can go a lot higher thasn that sometimes.

When you know it has peaked, then just top up the ammonia to 2 and wait..................... Sleep

Yep, thats about it now. Iwould top up for 2days after your 0-0- results as sometimes there can be a sort of false end to the cycle for some reason and that will just make sure it's all ok.

bit of a problem. Although my nitrite is staying the same. My ammonia is going down everyday so have to keep topping this up every 24 hours but my nitrate is going down? It was about 40 4 days ago. Been about 20 for 2 days and now its 5? Any ideas whats causing this?

First of all and i know this from experience - dont put corys in a freshly cycled tank

There are some nasty bvacteria lurking on the substrate at this early stage and corys living on the substrate will suffer - corys imho are best added about 1 month after cycling

The ammonia is normal - its the food for the cycle and you ought to be topping it up Wink

The nitrate issue as far as i know is partly to do with pH which changes throughout the cycle (and why we say dont bother testing pH until cycle is done) But I wouldnt worry too much about it - when you come to do the big water change, youll be dumping lots of nitrate anyway (or feed to plants around house/garden)

Maybe give the solutions in test kits a really good shake before you use em next time?

But whilst ive not experienced the nitrate do that in a cycle myself - it isnt unheard of/

To be blunt - you only need really worry about the nitrite and ammonia levels for now - when your sure the cycle had done - do the water change and then test the pH - hardness etc then you know what fish n plants are gonna be ok Smile

My ruby barbs thrived in a freshly cycled tank Wink you could have a poke thru my tank thred from the start to see what to expect

Good luck and fins crossed Wink

I wouldnt worry what the nitrate is doing to be honest phishy. Your ph and nitrate will be all over the place during the cycle, and the main ones to be concerned about are ammonia and nitrite.

Have you been checking the ph by the way?

Havent bothered with the PH, was gunna check when cycle was complete. So basically as soon as my nitrIte and ammonia go to 0 within a 24 hour period the cycle is done.

As mentioned above I would wait till it had maintained the 0-0 readings for 48hrs, so keep topping up to 2ppm when you habe got your first 0-0 readings for 48hrs do your water changes and then get fishies Smile
