PostSubject: Breeding Kribensis   Thu Apr 05, 2012 7:21 am

Hi,

I've just got a quick question... Today I placed a terracotta pot upside down with a little gap for them to get in. An they have been in there together back and forth. I've managed to see what they were doing. I can Only describe it as shaking very quickly against the inside of the pot and occasionally against each other.

They have swam around the tank since but have mainly stayed around the pot going in and out alot. The female even picked up a small stone in her mouth and placed it else where.

Do you think they are breeding? Have they bred?

How long does it go on for etc?

Thank you!!

Hiya, and welcome to the forum.

How great to be having a go at breeding kribs Smile Are they in a tank on their own or in with other fish?

From what I remember the main way you know if they have bred or not is that the female goes missing for a few days busy laying eggs.

They are best in a tank on their own as the male gets very aggressive if any other fish go near the nursery.

They sometimes eat the first couple of layings and then have a successful brood so you may not get anything from this batch.

Good luck though and keep us informed Smile

They are actually in a tank with 3 guppies and 3 peppered Cory's that also seem to be breeding.

They are currently just swimming around the tank going in every now and then. The male seems to go in more than the female.

Thank you for replying as well! I love fish keeping and have become quite fond of my Kribs and Cory's Smile

just keep an eye that the male krib doesn't get aggressive towards the tankmates, maybe adding a few plants (plastic ones would be fine) to shelter the 'nursery' would help if he starts to get a bit narky

I have 2 big real plants in there that they love to eat off and a small artificial one.
Do you think they have bred?

Yes, she is but she going in and out more often now with male following behind her. Jut seen her picking up stones too. He goes in ALOT more than she does though and doesn't really leave the side of the entrance alone and fights off anyone that comes near.

When the female disappears from view for a few days and stays in her den then that is when you will know she is looking after any eggs.

You should know in a few days - get knitting little boottees just in case Smile

Just leave them to it! If you are serious about breeding kribensis then you need to keep a serious eye on them.

If they have spawned already though, do not mess with the tank. If the fish have lived together for a while and the kribs tolerate that then let them do it naturally.

You will soon find out if they have bred.

Good Luck x
