Hi all Smile

I have been doing a lot of research and have made a decision. In a couple of weeks i shall be purchasing a breeding pair of rams from The Czech Republic costing me £30 Shocked Shocked I am going to set up a tank and try and successfully breed them. Hoping that i get a few females as they are under very high demand. I will of course keep you updated Very Happy Very Happy

Really?? I didnt know that Matt. Is that where MC gets hers from? I have never considerd the fact that they would have to be brought such long distances.

It is amazing isn't it, although doesn't it put them under stress traveling all that way?

I am not sure if that is where MC gets hers. All i know is that the ones in the far east are injected with hormones, but they wear out and the fish loses its colour.

The ones from Czech are the very best quality. So i hope to breed some lovely ones Very Happy

Most of our fish come from singapore and far away places like that so i think most fish undergo stress!

Do you know why they are better from there Matt, is it a general thing or just cichlid related - is it an area where cichlid breeding is better than elsewhere?

All I know is that it's one of the only places where you can get good quality breeding pair Rams! As many breeders don't sell females for fear of competition!

My Rams came from Holland and they're a beautiful healthy pair. A pity they're both males... crazy

Did you order them specifically then Mary, not just get them from the lfs? I have never thought of people ordering fish specifically from abroad!

No, Fishfan - I was just lucky that my LFS imported them from there although as Matty said, a lot of fish come from fish farms in Singapore although I know that they import a lot of wild caught S. American species too such as plecs., otos and other catfish. Tbh, I've never thought to ask them where they get most of their stock from. I should - considering how many fish I've bought! Embarassed

I suppose when you think of the miles these fish travel before they get to your tank it's surprising that there aren't more problems with illnesses and so on.

I wonder what the loss rate is between those caught and those that get to the lfs?

Just to add... there has been a fair bit of bad press recently regarding bad batches of fish from Czech rep. I mentioned it in Marys' post about the betta.
I'm not saying all of them but do exercise caution before buying.

I get all of my fish from a guy who breeds in the UK. Wild caught cichlids that are on sale are from shipped from their respective lakes... ie. tanganyika, malawi etc.
I do not have any wild caught fish Smile

I find it hard to sit & look at a fish swimming around knowing it has been taken from a lake that is 360 miles long and 25 miles wide. Lake Malawi is the 9th largest in the world! (I'll be quiet now)

But i'm sure they wouldn't too happy being shipped in a box & plonked in a little fish tank. Even if you had a 1000 gallon tank, it isn't a lake, lol tongue

ps. Lake Victoria is the size of Ireland & is the world's 2nd largest freshwater lake (OK, now i feel like a trainspotter, i'll get me coat)

I think that's the right way MC, it would be good if all fish came from home stock.

I heard about that MC!! I told the shop that i was only paying £30, if i have seen them feed and they have been fine in the LFS for about 2 weeks. I'm not wasting £30! But they come from a private breeder not the more commercial fish industry.

You are a fountain of knowledge with your lakes aren't you! Very Happy

Ive never bought LFS cichlids but my local lfs breeds a lot of his own. They look the same, colors, size etc but most average at £9, i pay £2, occasionally £3 Very Happy
It's nice to know the breeder I get mine from doesn't get them all inter breeding within a group too
